Dental Insurance Coverages, How does a typical dental insurance plan work

So what I am wanting to know is if say I buy a typical dental insruance plan what would a get out of it? I know some plans say free cleaning and X-rays but is that really all I get? Would I be albe to have fillings done at a low cost?
What about the rest of the dental services do all dental insurance plan make you wait until you can have anything beyond a cleaning done? Seems to me that they offer a free cleaning as if it is something really good but you have to hope you do not need anything else for a year. Please advise why that is the case.

Sounds like off hand you maybe reviewing dental PPO insurance plans. They are the dental insurance plans that will normally have waiting periods for basic and major dental needs.
One normally will buy a PPO when they are trying to stay with their own dentist. If that is not your case may I suggest you look into dental HMOs insurance plans.
HMO normally does not have the long term waiting periods like PPO and they lay out the cost for all the dental services covered under the plan. You may like that type of dental plan better.

Whatever plan you choice make sure you read the plans detail. I get the feeling that you have not gone beyond just the basic information provided.
It is important to know the detail and to understand the terms and conditions of the plan in question. Take your time and remember most web sites have a member service line you can call if you have questions.
